Instagram Direct automation

Instagram Direct can be automated, but only within clear boundaries set by Meta. The key rule is the 24-hour reply window: you may reply freely for a day after the user's last message. After that only a human agent can reply, using the HUMAN_AGENT tag for up to 7 days, and a commenter can receive one private reply.

What is allowed?

Allowed: auto-replying to an incoming message within 24 hours, routing conversations between agents, writing messages into a CRM, templated replies, and one private reply to someone who commented (within 7 days of the comment). Not allowed: messaging people who never wrote or commented first, or sending automated or promotional messages after the window closes.

How the 24-hour window works in practice

The 24 hours start counting from the moment the user writes to you. Inside that period you can send any text. If they write again, the window restarts.

Once the window closes, automated messages cannot be sent. The exception is a human agent reply tagged HUMAN_AGENT, allowed up to 7 days after the user's last message, if your app has the Human Agent feature approved in App Review. That makes response speed a technical requirement.

That is exactly why the first benefit of integration is cutting response time: when a conversation sits in the CRM as a task, it does not slip past the day.

A healthy automation pattern

  1. Instant acknowledgement

A short automatic reply to the first message: say it is automated, confirm the enquiry is received and when to expect an answer.

  2. One qualifying question

A single precise question — product, region or budget. The answer is written into a lead field in the CRM.

  3. Hand over to a human

After qualification the conversation is assigned to a real rep. The contact profile (followers, follow status) sets the priority.

  4. Window monitoring

Move conversations approaching 24 hours into their own queue — those are the leads most often lost.

What to avoid

  • Spam and bulk sends — they lead to account restrictions.
  • Handing the whole conversation to a bot — customers are lost on the first hard question.
  • Trying to send promotions after the window closes — the API returns an error and nothing is sent.
  • Passing an automated reply off as a human — where the law requires it, Meta policy makes disclosing automation mandatory (at the start of a conversation, after a significant lapse of time, and when a chat moves from a human to automation), and recommends it everywhere else.
  • Using unofficial tooling — it risks the account being blocked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run a bot in Instagram Direct?

Yes, if it runs on the official Instagram Messaging API, respects the 24-hour window and tells the user they are talking to automation. Unofficial automation tools put the account at risk.

How fast should an auto-reply go out?

Technically within seconds. In practice what matters is that the first reply lands inside the 24-hour window and a human answer follows quickly.

How should conversations be routed?

The contact profile helps: people who already follow you and have larger audiences usually deserve higher priority. The rest is your CRM's routing rules.

Can I DM someone who commented on my post?

Yes, with a private reply: one message within 7 days of the comment. Further messages are possible only if the user replies, and must go out within 24 hours of that reply.

How does an auto-reply work technically?

A new Direct message reaches your endpoint through the webhook's messages field. Your backend verifies the signature, parses the event and replies through the Send API within the 24-hour window. In the Socialift SDK that is verify_request(), parse_events() and ig.send_message().
