What is a social CRM?
A social CRM is a way of working where the customer conversation starts on social networks and continues inside the CRM. Some vendors sell it as a separate product, but technically it is a channel layer added to a CRM you already use. A Direct message, comment or lead form arrives as a webhook and becomes a contact and a deal in the CRM.

How is a social CRM different from a regular CRM?
A regular CRM receives data from manual entry or web forms. A social CRM uses the social networks themselves as the source: a Direct message, a comment or a lead form automatically becomes a contact and a deal. The difference is how data gets in; the functions — pipeline, tasks, reporting — stay in the same CRM.
Why it started to matter
In many markets the first conversation between a customer and a seller often happens in Instagram Direct. If that conversation lives only inside a phone app, the company loses three things: control over response time, the history, and attribution.
A social CRM closes all three gaps. You do not need to replace the CRM to get there — connecting the channel is enough.
Separating the terms
- Social CRM
- A model where conversations on social networks are brought inside the CRM, plus the integrations that make it work.
- Omnichannel CRM
- An approach where every channel — Instagram Direct, Telegram, phone, email, website — converges on one customer record.
- Integration layer
- The technical intermediary between CRM and platforms: OAuth, events, signatures and rate limits are solved here. In Socialift this is the Python SDK — for example parse_events() for Meta webhooks.
- Lead management
- Capturing, qualifying, assigning and tracking leads — the CRM's core job.
First steps when building a social CRM
- Identify which channel produces the most enquiries — often Instagram Direct.
- Start measuring response time: the pre-integration number becomes your baseline.
- Write down the event → CRM object mapping (conversation, lead, comment).
- Tag every record with its source — reporting is built on that.
- Only then add automation: auto-replies, routing, reminders.
Frequently asked questions
Is social CRM a separate product?
Usually not. It is a matter of adding a channel to the CRM you already have. Some vendors sell it as a standalone product, but technically it is an integration layer.
Which channel should I start with?
The one that brings the most enquiries — measure it first. For businesses that sell through Instagram this is often Direct, followed by Lead Ads and comments.
My CRM has no API — what now?
Then a direct integration is not possible. Options: store events in a separate service or database and import them into the CRM on a schedule (for example, CSV), or move to a CRM with an API.
Do I need to replace my CRM to get a social CRM?
No, as long as your CRM has an API. amoCRM and Bitrix24, for example, expose APIs for creating leads and contacts, and your backend writes social events there. Socialift has no ready CRM connector — it is the layer (a Python SDK) that talks to the platforms.
What is the difference between social CRM and omnichannel CRM?
Social CRM focuses on social channels: Instagram Direct, comments, Lead Ads, Telegram. Omnichannel CRM is broader — phone, email, website and social networks converge on one customer record. In practice a social CRM is often one part of an omnichannel approach.
